Andover Lake

Lake Profile
Lake: Andover Lake
Type: Natural
Use: Restricted
Acres: 159
Town(s): Andover

Tranquil Andover Lake in the charming New England town of Andover, CT is 159 acres in size and is considered one of the cleanest lakes in CT. The lake was formed in the late 1920’s when a group of investors had two streams dammed when a 550 ft dam was constructed, the land was logged and then cleared in the lake bed.

This pristine lake is privately owned and managed, with a significant amount of time and effort spent on preserving the lake and the surrounding areas. Policies have been put in place to preserve the lake area including the bleaching of all boats entering the lake after having been in other bodies of water and the development of a Lake Environmental Awareness program. One of the other important policies for the lake to both preserve the pristine environment and to maintain a peaceful, serene setting is that no engines of any kind are allowed on the lake.

Residents enjoy the tranquility of the area and swimming, sailing, canoeing, fishing and kayaking are a few of the recreational activities in the area. With a private and peaceful atmosphere, the lake is also unique as being one of the largest non-power boat lakes in the area.

Adults and children enjoy fishing during the summer and ice fishing during the winter on the lake. The fish population is self-sustaining and although there are a variety of species in the lake fish of choice is the Largemouth Bass.

Andover is a classic small New England town with roots going back to the 1700’s when farms dotted the area and at one time there was even a railroad station in the town. Access to charming shops and large shopping areas are within a short drive to Hartford, Glastonbury, Manchester and the shops at Evergreen Walk as well as The Buckland Shopping Mall which has numerous shopping plazas, restaurants and a movie theatre in the surrounding area. Excellent restaurants in the area include one of our favorites, Nu Nu’s Bistro in Colchester is only 12 miles away and serves excellent Sicilian/Italiian Cuisine in a charming atmosphere and you bring your own wine - perfect after spending a day on the lake!

For a bike ride, walk or equestrian trails Andover offers a number of parks and recreational areas including The Doris Chamberlain Nature preserve and The Hop River State Park Trail which is part of the East Coast Greenway. The lake is also mere minutes from UConn & ECSU.
